The Team
Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa (CARM)
The Church currently owns and manages various Primary and Secondary schools in the area. They own the Kikambala Primary School, which has approximately 1,500 students at the moment. The Proposed Secondary School will be built on the adjoining land to the Primary School. The land is owned by the Church and has been donated towards this project. Upon construction of the school, the Church will own and manage the school under the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Samara Visram
Samara grew up close to the Kikambala village, in the Kilifi County. She realized that many students younger than her were not able to gain a Secondary education because of the lack of Secondary Schools in the County. The Primary School in the area (Kikambala Primary School) serves 1500 students. The closest Secondary School is approximately 5km away and is overpopulated. Many students are not able to gain admission to Secondary Schools, and if they do, they are not able to afford the boarding or transportation costs.
This led her to embark on this project so that the students of the Kikambala village have a school that is close-by. She began by completing research on current Secondary Schools, interviewing various Education Representatives in the Country, visiting other Schools and completing an in-depth analysis of the Ministry of Education’s School of Excellence Requirements. After this Initial Research stage, she held various Barazas (meetings) with the community to obtain their design ideas, goals and approval for this project. She then designed the school with the community and worked with a County Architect who was assigned to this project by the Governor of Kilifi, H. E. Amason Kingi. Samara further worked with a Quantity Surveyor and Structural Engineer to come up with the Bill of Quantities for the project. The designs and drawings were approved by the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) as well as the Kilifi County.
